It’s evolved into a darn good, old-fashioned drag race, but the NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion has always been about the people.
And while there will be a record number of race cars on hand — more than 300 — for the 20th annual edition this weekend at Auto Club Famoso Raceway, the event continues to shine a spotlight on the people and machinery from the early days of drag racing.
Fittingly, a man who helped start the reunion and remains heavily involved today, Steve Gibbs, is serving as Grand Marshal. Gibbs has been involved in the sport since 1961 when he started working part time at San Gabriel and Fontana drag strips. He went on to serve as NHRA competition director for 25 years before retiring in 2003.
“When we initiated the CHRR, we had no conception of where it was headed … but we’re still here after 20 years — so I guess it was a pretty good idea,” he said. “Drag racing and hot rodding was such a big part of so many of us, especially those of us who grew up in the ’50s and ’60s, and we were all reaching an age when we started looking back on shared times — the best times of our lives.
