At St. Paul's Ford plant, some rolled the dice

Mitchell Frazier's work as a theatrical lighting designer didn't bring in enough to support a family, so 11 years ago, he started working on the assembly line at St. Paul's Ford Motor Co. plant in Highland Park.

With the 1925-vintage Twin Cities Assembly plant scheduled to close Dec. 19, Frazier and the 800 or so other workers who have been producing the Ford Ranger pickup will soon be out of work.

Some will retire. Some hope to transfer to plants elsewhere.

Frazier is one of many who aren't eligible for a transfer because they were rehired after a big Ford buyout in 2006. Currently working as an employee assistance representative at the plant, he is realistic about what the future holds.

"I don't expect that right out of the box I'll walk into a job that pays me what I make here after 11 years," said Frazier, 47, who lives in Minneapolis. . "It's going to be a change."
