Gary Locke is the new US ambassador to China. Someone took a photo of Ambassador Locke buying coffee at Starbucks on the way to his new assignment. Some more pictures showed the ambassador and his family arriving at a Chinese airport carrying their own bags.
To the Chinese this was unbelievable. A columnist for the China Daily joked that to many Locke looked like "a migrant worker." The ambassador, who was the US commerce secretary before this assignment, is originally from China, and has the habit of also using a backpack when travelling.
To the Americans this is nothing unusual. But to the Chinese it defied belief. In that country even a person in charge of a small township, which at any rate is not a high post, has a driver and a secretary to carry his bag.
So how could someone who is an ambassador of one of the most important countries in the world to another very important country not have anyone to carry his luggage or a driver to take him to his destination?
