Blind for a day, mindful for life
Then there are the people.
I can hear the click-clack of shoes, but I don't know from which direction they are coming.
I can hear cars and buses, too. I don't want to tangle with them.
As I walk, I find I'm using my other senses - touch, smell and hearing - more than usual.
I'm so thankful for my helper, Guide Dogs SA.NT orientation and mobility instructor Peter Skjott. He is aiding me on the walk we are taking to acknowledge that today is International White Cane Day.
I clutch his arm for dear life as he tells me about the white cane and its uses.
"It's about being able to cross a road safely, being able to walk around your local area and really trust that the cane is going to keep you safe," he says.
"As instructors, we train people to use canes and get around, but if the environment isn't safe, what will happen is they will sit at home because they don't feel safe and confident."
He tells me about the time he walked into a client's home to find moving boxes everywhere.
