Swiss-born Louis Chevrolet was not only a racer; he was a mechanic and engineering pioneer. As a racer, he had a reputation as a daring driver and, in 1905, set a land-speed record of 111 mph in a special open race car.
In the meantime, Durant founded GM in 1908 and hired Chevrolet for high-profile races and promotional drives. When he was forced out of the company he founded in 1910, Durant formed a new partnership which included Chevrolet to develop a new car. He believed Chevrolet’s reputation as a racer would help sell the car, so it was named for him and the company launched in 1911.
The first car, the Series C Classic Six, was a big, well-crafted car with a 4.9-litre six-cylinder engine that produced 40 hp and could hit a top speed of about 65 mph. That was big speed in those days, and the car had a big price — $2,150, which would be the equivalent of $50,000 in today’s dollars. It had an electric starter and electric headlamps, rare even in luxury vehicles of the time.
