Record $1.8m for bike injury
A YOUNG man left a paraplegic after a motorcycle crash has been awarded $1.8 million in damages believed to be the highest such award ever made by a Tasmanian court.
Joshua Potts was 18 when he suffered catastrophic injuries in the accident while on a team bonding weekend with three soccer mates at White Beach in January 2002.
He was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle being ridden by his friend Darren Frost when they set out on a late-night joyride from a shack they were staying at with friends.
Both men had been drinking and neither was wearing a helmet. Another friend, concerned for their safety, followed in his car and suggested they head back.
But just 1km from their destination the motorcycle left the road on a bend and hit a tree. Both men were left paraplegic by the accident.
Mr Potts' recovery was so painful and difficult he was plagued by depression and begged nursing staff to shoot him.
The former keen amateur soccer player and outdoor enthusiast sued Mr Frost in the Supreme Court of Tasmania.
