CAMBRIDGE — Fire truck access trumps resident complaints about losing treasured parking along Elliott Street – and on streets across the city
Elliott is nine metres wide. A city emergency access standard approved by council three years ago allows parking on the both sides of streets that are 10 metres wide.
Monday, city councillors approved in principle banning parking along the south side of Elliott, between the north and south legs of Taylor Avenue. The issue goes to council Monday for final debate.
There’s never been a problem for fire trucks getting through with cars parked on both sides, said resident Jan Wood-Salomon. Where will friends and family park when they visit if half the parking is removed?
“What this is to us is a lifestyle change. It greatly affects how we live our life,” she said.
“If you do it, we’re going to have to move, because we won’t live that way.”
City staff proposed removing one side of parking after someone who doesn’t live on the street complained, she said.
