Spark plugs' days may be numbered

When you think of replacing spark plugs, it’s probably in the context of a routine engine tune-up. But when automotive engineers consider the subject, they’re thinking in terms of replacing the spark plug altogether, finding alternative ways of performing the spark plug’s function and doing it better.

Over the 100-plus year history of the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine (ICE), few elements have remained as constant in concept and function as the spark plug. But now, its days may be numbered.

Not that the spark plug itself hasn’t evolved. Today’s tiny plugs with their iridium electrodes and 160,000-km replacement intervals resemble their early predecessors only in principle.

The spark plug’s role, as it’s name implies, is to generate a spark to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber of an engine cylinder. And to do so consistently, at precisely the right time, up to 75 times a second in some modern engines (more than twice that rate in today’s Formula 1 engines).
