Strong sales drive automotive sector

Roy Cokayne

The automotive sector is bucking the trend of declining confidence levels in business and among manufacturers because of strong new car sales, driven by exceptional value in this market compared with the used car market.

The latest WesBank vehicle sales confidence indicator released yesterday revealed that overall confidence levels among dealers in the fourth quarter remained unchanged from the previous quarter at 6.1 on a 10-point scale.

Chris de Kock, WesBank’s executive head of sales and marketing, said that the stable confidence levels reflected the continued growth in domestic vehicle sales, which had been surprisingly buoyant during the period and had been driven largely by consumer demand.

He said people who bought cars four years ago and were now coming back into the market, were able to buy a similar car at a much cheaper price.
